IWG expands its footprint in Portugal with the opening of the country’s first Spaces in Lisbon
Spaces – the Amsterdam-based division of IWG – is coming to Portugal, with its first co-working space in the country opening in Lisbon at the end of the year.
The 5,700-square-metre Spaces Marquês de Pombal is in the heart of the city, at the top of Avenida da Liberdade and a stone’s throw from Parque Eduardo VII.
“Marquês de Pombal is the most central part of Lisbon - the transitional point between the city’s historical districts and modern districts,” says Jorge Valdeira, IWG’s country manager for Portugal. “You can feel the heartbeat of the city. It’s where companies want to be, with good transport services, close to banks, restaurants and the main attractions of the Portuguese capital.
“The new Spaces is right in front of Parque Eduardo VII, where members can relax, run or play tennis. We have a large shared balcony and also a few smaller private ones, and the view over the square and the park is amazing.”
Spaces Marquês de Pombal is spread across nine floors, with dedicated workstations and offices, meeting rooms and a 700-square-metre business club available to members, all with super-fast Wi-Fi. The site also offers shower facilities and a café.
The new Spaces is accessible via two Metro lines, with a station on the doorstep, as well as being close to a bus station, a bike-sharing hub and plenty of parking facilities. Lisbon Portela International Airport is a ten-minute drive away.
Lisbon is a fitting location for IWG – which already has a number of Regus offices in the city – to roll out the Spaces brand, which focuses on creating dynamic workspaces for an open-minded business community and fostering a unique, innovative spirit.
The Portuguese capital is often dubbed the ‘San Francisco of Europe’ thanks to its growing pool of tech companies, a thriving startup scene (helped by government initiatives) as well as a booming economy.
With this proliferation has come a new wave of entrepreneurs and executives – digital nomads who are looking to work smarter. They recognise the benefits of using flexible co-working spaces over traditional office environments with long-term leases and high overheads.
“IWG is already present in the main cities of Portugal, and now we want to introduce Spaces to another community of entrepreneurs and a new generation of workers,” says Valdeira. “This is the ideal time to open Spaces in Portugal, because the economy is growing, and a lot of companies are setting up in the country. Lisbon is a cosmopolitan and diverse city with a great climate, amazing food, nightlife and a beach. It’s extremely safe, tolerant and still very affordable. It has a great quality of life, which makes it an attractive place to live for many expats, especially youngsters.”
